My Dolls’ House Project

Posted on October 5th, 2009 by Rebecca Payne

Hello All,

I’m fairly new to this wonderful hobby, and have recently got a new dolls’ house. It is second hand, and hand-made. Me and My mum are going to do up this house soon. I’ve got the wallpapers, carpets, lighting, and most of the furniture, but am not sure how to put these things in.  I was wondering if any of you, have any tips for me, my theme is Victorian, Edwardian.

Thank you,

Rebecca
(by the way, I’m 11 years old…but I use the collectors Items and have been for years. I’m very gentle!!)

    Heya Spencer!
I live in Wales…Mid Wales (right in the middle)
For your ‘naked’ dolls, I will give you instructions to make a pair of trousers.

    TROUSERS:

    1) Measure the length and width of your dolls legs and *cough, cough* ummm… bum.
    2) You could even draw around the legs. Then trace onto felt, and cut out.
    3) Then, using your piece of trouser shape, trace another onto same colours felt, and cut out. Now you have 2 trouser shapes.
    4) sew the legs in th bits that needs to be sewn.

O.k, i know I’m not very good at explaining things, but hopefully this works out!!!

  6. hello all ,
im kaytie, im 14 years old
i got wentworth court last christmas and i painted the walls so it would end up a smooth finish i also just used left over carpet so i saved quite alot of money !

  7. spencer grace Says:

    Thanks Rebecca!
Hopefully that will work. I am doing LakeView up ultra modern, and they have glittery felt now over here! i started making some dolls this week out of embroidery floss, wire and clay! for my house i have a cuple different options for the floors. A) i will use hardwood which i would stain a honey color. B) i could use white marble. C) i just came up with this idea today, and i gives me the most options for what i want to do with it, plus its ultra creative and modern. what i would do with this is that i would pour glue all over my floors, then sprinkle seed beads all over the floor. when the glue dries the beads will look like they are just laying on the floor, but they will keep their place and look like rainbow stones!

What do you guys think? What should i do about walls? i like some wallpapers, but should i use paint instead?

    Peace, Spencer

  8. hey glad my tip helped Becca also make sure you have a lot of super glue you will be suprised how much you go through be and my mum whent through about five tubes of the stuff!
    :D

  10. spencer grace Says:

My theme is comtemporay/ modern. I guess i will need to buy more superglue now. Ha Ha. have been trying to fix up a two room kit that i built over the summer. it is unpainted and looks pretty rough, but my people need a place to live until i can build lake view for them!

  11. I have just made the barn so now my family have a place to put thier horse and an extra room which i’m going to turn into a study
    stacy

  12. spencer grace Says:

  14. spencer grace Says:

i made a modern white sectional couch! i really cant believe it. im crafty but not in recovering and making doll clothes…..

  15. don’t you do sewing at school, or go to girl guides or have some one in your family that can help you make the doll clothes. i mean i could show i don’t think my mum would let me go to america just to let me show you how to make doll clothes! sorry
    stacy

  16. spencer grace Says:

welll, my grandmother taught me how to sew about 5 years ago. i have been sewing ever since but not tiny sewing. i mainly work in building sock monkeys. i believe i could do it if i had a pattern. have you ever hear of the miniture coustumier by catriona hall? does anyone know if it is modern clothing patterns or victorian?

  17. sorry no but i’ll look on the internet for you okay

  18. spencer grace Says:

Im am very mad! i am an ultramodern freak and we just had a big yard sale. i made a ton of money to spend on dollhouse stuff, but cant find anything that is modern and in my budget range! ugh!

  19. the victorain stuff is more expessive. can’t you evan afford acessoris?

  20. spencer grace Says:

Yah i can afford accesories and a bunch of furniture but the modern stuff i like has to get custom built and that costs alot.

  21. Oh thats sad :(

  22. spencer grace Says:

yah but my mom said that i could(should) get a reallly nice custom kitchen and bath made and that be all i get for christmas. i really only want dollhouse stuff(other than a guitar) so she might have a deal. Oh! and my friend(the one who i got onto dollhouses) is buying a kit for christmas. She loves making the people and loves the hobby! SO WHAT NOW ALL THOSE WHO THINK THAT BECAUSE WE PLAY WITH DOLLHOUSES WE ARE FREAKS!!!

  23. first you are not a freak. secound can you play guitar? i got a gutair ages ago but i can’t play it very well do you what acustic or electric i have acustic. thirdly i can’t think of a third thing so i will just say DOLLS HOUSES ROCK!
    bye

  24. spencer grace Says:

well i was going to learn guitar long ago but they said my hands and fingers were to small. so i am going to learn now. the guitar i like is an acoustic electric( you play like an acoutstic but it can sound like electric). does it hurt your fingers to play? lots of people say it really hurts ur fingers. oh and i dont play but know how(sorta. i dont know the chords but i know how u play) and i might get a book 2 help me learn

Stacy- i plan on getting picks Rebekah- check the dollhouse emporium christmas pages(lots of christmas stuff!)

  32. The Victorian era is a good choice.

Victorians tended towards dark colours – reds and greens.

Paintwork was seldom white more often creams, greens, reds etc as colours need less upkeep than white.

Wallpaper was very popular in Victorian times – they loved lots of patterns on their walls and carpets/rugs (wooden floors with dark, heavy rugs were more common than carpets).

There was no heating so the dark colours were not only easier to maintain but also gave warmth to cold rooms. Open fireplaces were used and the fumes from the burning wood or coals would discolour rooms (another reason they chose colours rather than white).

Lots of family photos would be displayed – I think I saw some on the Dolls House Emporium – or you could have a go at making frames with silver or gold paper and attach a long thread to the back – Victorians had picture rails and would bang a nail into the rail and the pictures would hang showing the chain or string – you could use very thin ribbon or glittery thread. Try hanging two or three photos from one piece of ribbon, perhaps with a decorative bow. For photos you could have fun with family pics – crop them and print them tiny using sepia or black and white. If you don’t have a photo editing programme, have a look at a free one like Photobucket where you can upload photos and edit them with different effects (make sure you set your account to “private”).

Victorians had high backed chairs and beds and heavy draped curtains to keep away draughts. Metal beds were popular to deter bed bugs!

Victorians tended to have covers on tables etc and draped to cover table legs – as showing table legs was considered quite vulgar!

Kitchens would have had dressers and open shelves rather than the cupboards and fitted kitchens we have today.

Google the “Museum of Childhood” and have a look at the houses on their website (not sure which ones are on there now) and find some Victorian dolls houses.

Most of all, have fun and enjoy renovating your dolls house.
